about

-I design for music artists, commissioning projects such as logos, single covers and album covers.

-I currently am blogging on this site, focusing on how art and technology intersect from a music approach alongside other ideas I feel an interest in.

-I graduated from King’s College London (’23) with my first-class dissertation titled “Memories of Pain and Futures of Liberation: Octavia E. Butler’s Dawn and Mohale Mashigo’s Intruders: short stories“. It surrounds Afrofuturism, treating time radically and making space for Blackness in our imaginations of the future.

-I run a playlist curation business through socials where I put together soundscapes for those who wish to gift them to loved ones. My mind works by working with the bigger picture and zooming in, which works well with translating briefs people write for me and converting them into finished playlists.

– Worked as a research assistant at King’s College London, researching the anti-colonial literary journal Lotus (1960s-1980s). This magazine was run by the Afro-Asiatic Writers Association. To celebrate their contributions to international solidarity, our research team set up an exhibition to inspire the questioning of structures. I also created a musical accompaniment to the exhibition by compiling a sonic landscape of the era side by side with contemporary music of solidarity. Artists include Orchestra Baobab and Little Simz.

– Engaged with efforts to decolonise the curriculum as a student assistant at King’s College London. Here, I spoke candidly with faculty members, bringing up suggestions of cultural inclusion and calling for a wider scope of literary recommendations in modules.

-Am a member of Serpentine Studios – a collective of young artists in collaboration with the Serpentine Gallery. Together, we worked on showcasing our art with the gallery. I worked on poetry unpacking the neurodivergent Black experience.

– Was a writer at Strand Magazine’s music section, writing as well as putting together the magazine’s two monthly playlists: follower submissions and music writers’ picks. I had the idea to engage with Strand Mag’s socials (instagram) in collecting submissions from the its audience. My process included careful curation in understanding how sounds collide and work cohesively.

I have designed for the magazines socials. For example, for Strand’s sexual harassment campaign Talks on the Tracks and for the Spotted at Strand series where fashionable students are photographed on the Strand Instagram.

-Was an editor for the London Photography Diary; a curated website detailing photography exhibitions and events around London. Gained experience speaking with the press teams, handling media queries and keeping up with London’s arts landscape.

Sudi Jama (SJ)
Graphic Designer + Culture Writer

I’m interested in electronic subculture, the intersection between Blackness, queerness and futurism, and how we can use experimental music to broaden our imaginations of the future. I use visuals and the written word to do this. I have graduated with a BA Comparative Literature degree.

I’m based in London and am currently open for design commissions and writing opportunities.
