PLAYLISTS

Lotus and the Intercontinental

This is a sonic accompaniment to academic research on the cultural impact of the anti-colonial Lotus arts journal. The track list is split into two: songs of the era (1960s-80s) and contemporary tracks.

Last Strand Writers’ Picks

This playlist is one I put together every month as a Music Writer for Strand Magazine. I would draw from a pool of submissions and carefully pick out which tracks blend together for a seamless listening experience. Factors I think about are: order of track, genre, feel and emotion.

Sample History Archive Project

This is a project I’ve been undertaking to create an archive of sample history. With submissions from myself and other passionate music lovers, it has grown to be over 400 songs long. All submissions from myself are guaranteed to have been found by ear and by recognised it with my own musical knowledge. My range of recall and cultural knowledge is expansive, making curation my strong suit.

Sounds of Afrofuturism

I submitted a playlist alongside academic work as a presentation to display the sounds of Afrofuturism. My professor had this to say, “You might want to listen to these two outstanding playlists that Sudi Jama put together. In their own words, ‘For the Afrofuturism digital mixtape, I chose these songs because they celebrate and centre Blacknes. Aside from the obvious futuristic sounds in these tracks, I would argue what centres Blackness is truly futuristic in nature as Blackness is not centred in our present moment’. Her Zoo City mixtape focuses on themes of Blackness and criminality.”

De-stress for Strand Magazine

This playlist was for a de-stress event run by Strand Magazine. This event was called Sip&Zine, presented as an evening of zine-making, conversations and drinks.
